Mies van der Rohe (Basic Art Series 2.0)
Famed for his motto “less is more,” Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886–1969) was one of the founding fathers of modern architecture and a hotly-debated tastemaker of twentieth-century aesthetics and urban experience.Mies van der Rohe’s philosophy was one of underlying truth in pure forms and proportions. With the help of contemporary technological and material developments, he sought a stripped-down purity to architecture, showcased by the likes of the Seagram Building and Farnsworth House. Some spoke out against this stark approach as the precursor to bland, generic cityscapes. Others cite Mies van der Rohe as the ultimate master of an abidingly elegant essence. This book presents more than 20 of Mies van der Rohe’s projects from the period 1906–1967 to introduce his groundbreaking practise and influence in both America and Europe.

The artless word: Mies van der Rohe on the building art
Mies van der Rohe's architecture has been well documented, yet his writings that contain the key to his thought and to understanding his work have been largely unexplored. From Mies' library - including his marginal notes - and from a body of writing that is surprisingly large for the self-described "unwilling author," Fritz Neumeyer reconstructs the metaphysical and philosophical inquiry on which Mies based his modernism. An integrated view of Mies' philosophy of building, including his American career, emerges from Neumeyer's investigation. He proposes, for instance, that the Catholic church architect and writer Rudolf Schwarz, the Bauhaus thinker Siegried Ebeling, and the Catholic scholar Romano Guardini may have exerted an even greater influence on Mies than the frequently cited Plato, St. Augustine, and St. Thomas Aquinas and he points to the ways in which the thinking of other architects, such as Peter Behrens and Hendrik Petrus Berlage, affected Mies's development. Neumeyer also asserts that while Mies fervently believed in technology, in the notion that a building's form had to emerge from the nature of its materials, this view later shifted to include personal ordering of what Mies regarded as spiritual determinants, resulting in a new unity of spirit and fact that was b...

Mies van der Rohe: The Villas and Country Houses
This detailed and carefully reasoned study of the domestic architecture of Mies van der Rohe is a landmark contribution to contemporary understanding of the great architect's work. It is devoted to a close analysis of Mies' residential architecture, built and unbuilt, from 1923 to 1951. Many of its conclusions are pertinent to the whole of Mies' output. The book presents penetrating discussions of both the Concrete and the Brick Country House projects, two of the famous Five Projects of the 1920s which made Mies' early reputation; and, among others, the Lange and Esters Houses of 1927-1930; the Barcelona Pavilion and Tugendhat House of 1928-1930; and, in America, plans for a house in Wyoming for the Stanley Resors, and the Farnsworth House of 1946-1951. The analysis and the illustrations demonstrate a continuous development toward realization of the goal Mies himself described: "To bring Nature, houses and people into a higher unity." The original German language edition accompanied an exhibition organized by the Kaiser Wilhelm Museum, Krefeld, in conjunction with the Mies van der Rohe Archive of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, on the occasion of the public opening of the restored Lange and Esters Houses, now owned by the Kaiser Wilhelm Museum. All of the works exhibited ar...

New National Gallery, Berlin (Architecture in Detail)
The New National Gallery of Art in Berlin was Mies van der Rohe's last great building - the culmination of his aesthetic ideas and his sixty-year-long career. The gallery's compositional effect is classical, an impression that arises from the way in which the steel stanchions are carefully proportioned and spaced to recall classical columns; while the vast overhanging steel roof was intended to evoke a notional entablature. Sheltered by this roof is a great abstract 'universal' space capable of subdivision by freestanding panels designed for the hanging of artworks. Overall, the building is a monumental statement but one which bears witness to Mies's consummate sense of detail and craftsmanship in steel.

Tugendhat House. Ludwig Mies van der Rohe
Built and designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe 1928-1930, the Tugendhat House in Brno/Czech Republic is one of the most significant buildings of European modernism. In 2001, UNESCO added the house to the List of World Cultural Heritage Sites. Building on the book published by Daniela Hammer-Tugendhat and Wolf Tegethoff in 1998 (English edition 2000) the three authors, in this new edition, give personal and historic insights relating to the house; also documenting aspects pertaining to art history and conservation-science studies. The appeal of this monograph lies in the published photographs which reveal an unusual view of the house and highlight the intended fusion between architecture and nature. The experimental artistic colour photographs by Fritz Tugendhat are among the pioneering achievements of amateur photography; that these images have remained intact is indeed remarkable. Daniela Hammer-Tugendhat reflects on the question muchdebated in 1931, "Is the Tugendhat House habitable?" in a new, historico- cultural context. Using the example of the Tugendhat House Wolf Tegethoff explores the living concept of modernism. At the beginning, he critically reflects on the discourse surrounding the relationship between client and architect. Based on his research on the preserv...
