The Great Summit
Limited edition 180-gram vinyl LP reissue. Satchmo and The Duke were each in the midst of revitalized careers that were soaring higher than the fame of their youth when they joined forces to record "The Great Summit" in 1961. Each already was an unparalleled legend for nearly 30 years, and it is surprising they hadn't recorded more together. But then their styles were so different. Ellington was the sheer embodiment of sophistication and elegance in jazz. Armstrong was the earthy pulse of the people at large. Each had a ceaseless creativity and vitality that could only be matched by the other. All stylistic differences aside, few musicians on earth have had their sense of swingin' rhythm. This reissue remains a musical feast for the ears as Louie puts his own take on the music as Duke performs his biggest hits! You'll be blown away on "Mood Indigo;" "Black and Tan Fantasy;" "The Mooch;" "In a Mellow Tone;" "It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got that Swing)" and more. It couldn't possibly sound better than it does on this 180-gram audiophile vinyl.

Chillin' With Andy Bey
A major addition to the recorded history of one of the greatest jazz voices ever! For his last studio release, 2005 s American Song, Andy Bey received a Grammy nomination. One of the greatest vocalists and interpreters of the Great American Songbook. Recorded during a European tour in 2002, when Andy enjoyed a few days off and had the luxury of unlimited access to an intimate studio with a perfect piano. Without any pressure, he was able to express himself at his best.

Zanna, Don't! - A Musical Fairy Tale (2003 Original Off-Broadway Cast)
Zanna, Don't! takes place in a topsy-turvy world in which homosexuality is the norm and the minority heterosexuals must battle anti-straight prejudice. Set in a high school, the plot revolves around a teen fairy matchmaker (Zanna) and the hell that breaks loose when a boy and a girl dare fall in love with each other. Thankfully forgoing preachiness, creator Tim Acito manages to deliver a message of tolerance through a whole bunch of poppy, catchy songs, hearty dollops of humor (there's cheering--for a chess match), and, of course, a dab of magic (shades of the 1980 Olivia Newton-John vehicle Xanadu). While the show can be a little too nice at times, it's hard not to be won over by its impish exuberance. Fittingly, in the fall of 2003, Jai Rodriguez, who played the title role, transferred from the show's Off-Broadway run to TV, gaining fame as the "culture vulture" on Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Salutes Duke Ellington (An Album Of Blues)
Brooks Kerr was known as the premier protege and expert on the music of Duke Ellington. One day before Ellington's birthday, in 2018 Kerr himself passed away due to an ongoing bout with kidney disease. Born in 1951 with partial blindness he became totally blind by age 28. He was known for being both an expert on Ellington's music, as well as being a very interesting stride-style pianist, and a general jazz historian. He was fortunate enough to become a personal protege of Duke, often sitting in with the band as a 'relief' pianist, especially toward the end of Ellington's life, as he was battling cancer. In 1982 on his own label, Blue Wail, he started recording his own projects to document much of the music he studied and loved so much. On this first time CD and digital release, Brooks Kerr has dedicated a album's worth of Ellington 'blues' compositions, to show the variety of textures and formats with which Duke could create. Featured in a duo setting with the legendary bassist George Duvivier, Kerr creates a very happy, old fashioned mood that is quite enjoyable, listening after listening.

Gioia provides the reader with lively portraits of these and many other great musicians, intertwined with vibrant commentary on the music they created. He also evokes the many worlds of jazz, taking the reader to the swamp lands of the Mississippi Delta, the bawdy houses of New Orleans, the ren...
