Revolution in the Making: Abstract Sculpture by Women 1947-2016
Accompanying the most comprehensive exhibition of postwar abstract sculpture by women artists to date, Revolution in the Making traces the ways in which women artists deftly transformed the language of sculpture in the 20th Century. The volume teases out multiple strains of proto-feminist practices, characterized by abstraction and repetition, which rejected the singularity of a so-called 'masterwork'.Divided into four sections, the book features approximately thirty artists and nearly 100 works in total: the postwar era (the late 1950s) including such historically important predecessors as Ruth Asawa, Lee Bontecou, Louise Bourgeois, Claire Falkenstein, and Louise Nevelson; the 1960s and 1970s, highlighting a generation of post-minimalist artists who ignited a revolution in their use of process-oriented materials and methods; the 1980s and 1990s, the period that moved beyond three-dimensional objects toward architectonic works characterized by structure and design; and post-2000 works by artists who created installation-based environments, embraced domestic materials and adopted craft as an embedded discourse.

After the Revolution: Women Who Transformed Contemporary Art--Revised and Expanded Edition
Now available in a revised and fully updated edition, this book examines the rise of women artists in the late 20th century, viewed through the work of 12 key figures. "Why have there been no great women artists?" asked the prominent art historian Linda Nochlin in an intentionally provocative 1971 essay. In this book, four prominent critics and curators describe the strides made by women artists since the advent of the feminist movement and assess the changes that have occurred in their critical reception, commercial appeal, and institutional support. Following a comprehensive essay that looks back at the recent history of women artists, the authors examine the careers of an international selection of artists--Marina Abramovic', Louise Bourgeois, Ellen Gallagher, Ann Hamilton, Jenny Holzer, Elizabeth Murray, Shirin Neshat, Judy Pfaff, Dana Schutz, Cindy Sherman, Kiki Smith, and Nancy Spero--considering each figure's accomplishments and her influence on contemporaries and younger artists.

NATIONAL BESTSELLERWe all know the system isn’t working. Our governments are corrupt and the opposing parties pointlessly similar. Our culture is filled with vacuity and pap, and we are told there’s nothing we can do: “It’s just the way things are.” In this book, Russell Brand hilariously lacerates the straw men and paper tigers of our conformist times and presents, with the help of experts as diverse as Thomas Piketty and George Orwell, a vision for a fairer, sexier society that’s fun and inclusive. You have been lied to, told there’s no alternative, no choice, and that you don’t deserve any better. Brand destroys this illusory facade as amusingly and deftly as he annihilates Morning Joe anchors, Fox News fascists, and BBC stalwarts. This book makes revolution not only possible but inevitable and fun.

Soundtrack of the Revolution: The Politics of Music in Iran (Stanford Studies in Middle Eastern and Islamic Societies and Cultures)
Music was one of the first casualties of the Iranian Revolution. It was banned in 1979, but it quickly crept back into Iranian culture and politics. The state made use of music for its propaganda during the Iran–Iraq war. Over time music provided an important political space where artists and audiences could engage in social and political debate. Now, more than thirty-five years on, both the children of the revolution and their music have come of age. Soundtrack of the Revolution offers a striking account of Iranian culture, politics, and social change to provide an alternative history of the Islamic Republic. Drawing on over five years of research in Iran, including during the 2009 protests, Nahid Siamdoust introduces a full cast of characters, from musicians and audience members to state officials, and takes readers into concert halls and underground performances, as well as the state licensing and censorship offices. She closely follows the work of four musicians―a giant of Persian classical music, a government-supported pop star, a rebel rock-and-roller, and an underground rapper―each with markedly different political views and relations with the Iranian government. Taken together, these examinations of musicians and their music shed light on issues at the heart of deba...

Start The Revolution Without Me
Produced and directed by comedy veteran Bud Yorkin, Start the Revolution Without Me broke ground for a comedy revolution. It takes the tumultuous "let them eat cake" days of the French Revolution and gives everyone a figurative pie in the face. Two sets of twins are mismatched at birth so that years later, each set will have one Gene Wilder and one Donald Sutherland. One set grows up to be aristocratic swashbucklers; the other set are peasants. In a hilarious fluke of fate, they crisscross across classes. In the years following Start the Revolution Without Me, Woody Allen, Mel Brooks and the Abrahams/Zucker/Zucker team would all create madcap comedy masterpieces. A lineup like that must have had a tremendous Start.

Kuhn: Philosopher of Scientific Revolutions (Key Contemporary Thinkers)
Thomas Kuhn's shadow hangs over almost every field of intellectual inquiry. His book The Structure of Scientific Revolutions has become a modern classic. His influence on philosophy, social science, historiography, feminism, theology, and (of course) the natural sciences themselves is unparalleled. His epoch-making concepts of 'new paradigm' and 'scientific revolution' make him probably the most influential scholar of the twentieth century. Sharrock and Read take the reader through Kuhn's work in a careful and accessible way, emphasizing Kuhn's detailed studies of the history of science, which often assist the understanding of his more abstract philosophical work. These historical studies provide vital insight into what Kuhn was actually trying to achieve in his The Structure of Scientific Revolutions: an endeavour far less extreme than either his 'foes' or his 'fans' claim. In the book's second half, Sharrock and Read provide excellent explications, defences and, where appropriate, criticisms of Kuhn's central concept of 'incommensurability', and tackle head on the crucial issue of whether Kuhn's insights concerning the natural sciences can be extrapolated to other disciplines, such as the social sciences. This is the first comprehensive introduction to the work of Kuhn an...
