Baroque: The Visual Encyclopedia of Art
The definition of the Baroque age is still subject to debate among critics and historians. In one of its most commonly accepted meanings, Baroque describes some aspects of 17th-century art, with sumptuous Roma at the center, that upset the proportions and static harmony of the Renaissance—already undermined by Mannerism during the previous century—through the use of curves, strange movements of forms, the daring optics of illusionism, and theatricality. Bernini, Borromini, da Cortona, and Rubens were, among others, decisive examples. In addition to these theatrical expressions, the art of the 17th century also included quite different trends such as the naturalism in the works of Caravaggio, classicism in the works of the Carraccis and of Poussin, the intimacy of Vermeer and the pictorial atmospheres in the works of Rembrandt and Velazquez. The Rococo was born in France at the beginning of the 18th –century, characterized by airy forms, arabesques, elegance, and luminous colors in painting as well as sculpture and architecture; instead of heroic or sacred themes, it embodied a more lighthearted glance at aristocratic life, or scenes of daily life that might be gay or frivolous. Watteau, Fragonard, Boucher, Canaletto, and Bellotto were representatives of this style in paintin...

Baroque (Basic Art Series 2.0)
From dramatically lit paintings to elaborate gilded interiors, the Baroque era introduced a new dimension to Western art. In place of the harmonious perspectives and elegant proportions of the Renaissance came a world of momentum, energy, and heightened spectacle. The style influenced many forms and disciplines between the 16th and 18th centuries, infusing painting, sculpture, architecture, and music with a direct, often emotive, appeal to the audience. This TASCHEN Basic Art 2.0 edition focuses on Baroque painting. Through mythological and religious scenes, still lifes, and beyond, we explore how a vivid vocabulary of deep colors, intense shadows, dramatic gestures, and diagonal lines infiltrated both northern and southern European schools. Along the way, we meet such leading Baroque practitioners as Nicolas Poussin, Annibale Carracci, Caravaggio, Velázquez, Rubens, and Rembrandt, and examine their particular innovations in composition, narrative, and light to achieve a Baroque sensibility.

Baroque and Rococo Art and Architecture
Baroque and Rococo Art and Architecture is the first in-depth history of one of the great periods of Western art, spanning the years 1585 to 1785. The text treats the major media—painting, sculpture, drawings, prints, and architecture—as well as gardens, furniture, tapestries, costume, jewelry, and ceramics, all in terms of their original function and patronage and with emphasis on the social, political and cultural context. Organized by country and medium, the book contains biographies of the leading creative figures of the time, from Caravaggio and Rembrandt to Watteau and Hogarth. Significantly, Professor Neuman offers the fullest account to date of women artists and the representation of women and families in art. Additionally, drawing from recent scholarship, the text explores such fields as Spanish polychrome sculpture and Viceregal American painting. Baroque and Rococo Art and Architecture reviews traditional and recent strategies for interpreting artworks. It also traces the dissemination of visual ideas through prints and drawings—the forerunners of today’s art reproductions and digital media. In special sections the text raises questions regarding the nature of perception and how artists transfer optical data to the canvas. Artists’ techni...

French Baroque and Rococo Fashions (Dover Fashion Coloring Book)
Fashion ruled the courts of the "Sun King," Louis XIV (1638–1715), and his successor, Louis XV (1710–1774). The Sun King's quest for glory and love of conspicuous adornment manifested itself in his apparel, and he required the courtiers of Versailles to adopt similarly grand Baroque styles. A lighter fashion sense prevailed at the court of Louis XV, who favored Rococo styles of exquisite refinement. This magnificently rendered, scrupulously researched coloring book covers 135 years of French styles. Its 45 full-page black-and-white illustrations feature a wide spectrum of fashions, depicting costumes of both the nobility and commoners. Starting with the flamboyant cavalier clothing of the 1640s, the drawings trace the transition from Baroque to Rococo apparel, with portraits of farmers, street vendors, and aristocrats in formal and everyday dress. Each illustration is accompanied by an informative caption.
